Outreach to host third Educational Leaders Conference

Outreach at Auburn University at Montgomery on June 7 will host the third annual Educational Leaders Conference for educational leaders from across the state.

The conference provides K-12 principals and assistant principals with resources, expertise and tools that can be implemented in schools for great results. Also, the networking lunch provides principals and local business leaders the opportunity to collaborate.

The keynote on 21st century learning will be delivered by Stephan Turnipseed, an educational thought leader, strategist and hands-on learning proponent who is passionate about inspiring children through education.

Breakout topics will include team building, community involvement and support, ensuring teacher effectiveness, project-based learning, expectations from EDTPA, and neuromotor connections to education.

The planning and budget meeting and brown bag lunch hosted by Financial and Administrative Services has been moved to Wednesday, June 15.

Sahinoglu presents award-winning paper at Defense Acquisition University symposium

Dr. Mehmet Sahinoglu, Director of the Informatics Institute at AUM since 2008, presented as an invited keynote speaker April 27 at Fort Belvoir, Va., at the Defense Acquisition University‘s annual 2016 symposium.

Sahinoglu presented a paper titled “Metrics-Based Risk Assessment and Management of Digital Forensics,” jointly written by Sahinoglu, Stephen Stockton, Robert Barclay and Scott Morton.

The paper placed second in the nationwide Edward Hirsch Research Paper Competition, earning the authors a $500 check to be divided among four, and four separate plaques were awarded to AUM’s Informatics Institute.

Men’s soccer partners with Montgomery Area Food Bank

The Auburn University at Montgomery men’s soccer team has announced a partnership with the Montgomery Area Food Bank to help reduce hunger in the local area.

The team will be collecting canned goods for the food bank in the AUM Department of Athletics Suites in the Athletics Complex throughout May.

Last year, the soccer program collected 75 pounds of canned goods and hopes to exceed 200 pounds this year.

AUM IS Club visits RSA Datacenter

The AUM Information Systems (IS) Club, along with AUM faculty members Wendy Anderson and Tom Griffin, were recently treated to a tour of the RSA Datacenter in Montgomery.

The tour began with a brief history of the RSA building and included an explanation of the security procedures followed to enter the datacenter. Once on the 6th floor, the club received an overview of the datacenter and was shown how the heating, cooling, water and electric power are monitored continuously. Two large TV screens show an overview of the conditions inside the data center at all times.

The datacenter is designed so that no single point of failure can cause the center to fail. Redundant heating, cooling and electrical systems are provided to each datacenter. The electric power, for example, is supplied to the datacenters from two redundant banks of batteries. The batteries can be supplied by one of two massive diesel generators should building power be interrupted.

Inside the datacenter, the club was escorted to six different datacenters that house servers for companies that rent space from RSA. Customers of the datacenter include the State of Alabama and many large companies based outside Montgomery.

Orientation season starts soon, and the Office of Orientation and Transitions couldn’t be more excited. With help from the SWOT Team, we will welcome many new students into Warhawk Nation. Throughout summer, we will host 10 orientation sessions:

Webinar focuses on transgender bathroom and shower cases, policies

A webinar May 16 will provide information on “Transgender bathroom and shower issues: Recent cases, policy development, and federal legislation.”

The webinar will emphasize:

• Definitions of sexuality and gender identity
• How this topic relates to Title IX
• The importance of inclusive language
• Recent cases and legislative actions
• Key challenges faced when creating transgender policies.
