Planning for the Big Day
Graduation is the completion of all graduation requirements and official posting of a student’s degree to his/her academic record. Commencement is the ceremony in which students who are eligible to graduate participate. Although AUM has three graduation awarding dates per year (May, August, and December), there are only two commencement ceremonies (May and December).
While degrees are awarded three times during the year (May, August, and December), there are only two formal commencement ceremonies (May and December). The December commencement program includes those students who had graduated during the previous August as well as those students finishing their program in December.
Graduates order regalia (caps and gowns) at https://gradsupply.com/aum/ . All regalia questions should go to the AUM Bookstore at bookstore@aum.edu and 334-244-3578.
University regulations require that all degree candidates be enrolled during the term of graduation. If a student fails to graduate in the term for which application is made, the applicant must reapply in a subsequent term. (The graduation fee will not be assessed for reapplication.)
To re-apply, please contact registrar@aum.edu.
Diplomas will be mailed to graduates approximately three weeks after commencement to the address provided on the graduation application. Graduates may email registrar@aum.edu to confirm or change the mailing address. The company that produces the diplomas will send an email to the graduate’s AUM email address when the diploma has been sent via UPS. Digital diplomas are only available to AUM graduates of Spring 2024 or later.
The non-refundable graduation fee ($85 for undergraduates and $98 for graduate students) will be posted to your student account. You will be notified by email when the fee has been assessed to your account.
If a graduate has a disability and requires assistance, contact the Registrar’s Office by October 16, 2024 at 334-244-3125 or email registrar@aum.edu. While there will not be any preceding seating reservations, there will be staff to assist with guest seating and wheelchair access seating.
If you qualify, academic honor cords and/or military honor cords will be distributed during the pre-ceremony. (Please contact the specific organizations for honorary scholastic cords. If you are receiving a cord from another organization, pick it up from the sponsor in advance of commencement.)
Graduates will check in at 221 Taylor Center at 8:30 A.M. for the morning ceremony and at 12:30 P.M. for the afternoon ceremony.
Candidates are encouraged to wear black clothing under the gown. Comfortable black dress shoes are recommended since you will be doing a lot of walking. The tassel on your mortar board hangs on the right of the cap as you enter the ceremony. During the ceremony when the degrees are conferred, you will move it to the left.
Before 9:40 A.M. for the morning ceremony and before 1:40 P.M. for the afternoon ceremony.
Due to a larger than normal graduating class, we recommend inviting 8 guests. Guests do not need tickets.
You may order invitations from any vendor of your choosing.
Making a class gift is a way to commemorate your graduation and the first step to starting your legacy of alumni involvement. Graduating students who give at least $20.XX (class of 20XX) will receive a commemorative medallion to wear at Commencement.

Answer: If you need to delay participating in commencement to a later semester, you can request this by emailing registrar@aum.edu. You do not have to be enrolled at AUM the semester that you walk at commencement (You do have to be enrolled at AUM during the semester that you graduate and your degree is awarded.).
