Title: Respect as an Intellectual Virtue: A Habit of Mind for Uncivil Times.

Abstract: Public discourse all too often is characterized by contempt and rudeness instead of civility and respect. How might we do better? We propose that genuinely civil discourse requires the development of mature habits of mind, and that the intellectual virtue of respect is especially important in this regard. After providing a sketch of this under-appreciated virtue, we will offer several practical suggestions for how individuals and communities might become more respectful, even amidst deep disagreements.
