Unity Day at AUM

The Office of Accountability and Advocacy will recognize Unity Day — the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month — on Wednesday, Oct. 22, to encourage students to take a stand against bullying.

On Unity Day, the AUM community is encouraged to wear orange and visit AUM’s Kindness Station from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the Warhawk Resource Center on the second floor of the Taylor Center. The station will feature:

  • Free orange giveaways and goodies
  • Information on how to identify and report bullying
  • Quick ways to spread kindness on campus

AUM will join individuals, schools, communities, and businesses across the nation in wearing or sharing orange to promote kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.

Let’s stand together as Warhawks and make kindness the norm.

Breast cancer awareness with Staff Council

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the AUM Staff Council invites faculty and staff to a talk by Dr. Jean Leuner, dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Dr. Leuner will discuss breast cancer prevention, education, and support at the Staff Council’s meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. in Goodwyn Hall, Room 109.

All faculty and staff are encouraged to attend and show support for this important cause.

Faculty workshop highlights student mental health

AUM’s Faculty Development Institute will spotlight the importance of student well-being during its upcoming Faculty Friday Workshop, “Student Mental Health in Higher Education: Fostering Mental Wellness in Higher Education Communities.”

The workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 24, in Goodwyn Hall 109.

The workshop will feature a keynote address by Dr. Tijil Agarwal, MD, a neurologist and vascular neurologist at Jackson Hospital in Montgomery. His presentation, “Functional Neurological Symptoms: Bridging Awareness and Compassionate Response,” will focus on conditions such as unexplained weakness, tremors, or speech changes that often stem from stress or emotional distress rather than structural brain disease.

In addition to Dr. Agarwal’s keynote, the event will feature presentations on student mental health, browse tables from supporting organizations, and a panel of AUM experts who will share perspectives and resources for supporting student mental health. Panelists include:

  • Jess Mazaheri, Director of Disability Services
  • Shu-Ching Wang, Director of Counseling & Health Promotion Services
  • Paul Hard, Chair, Department of Counseling, Leadership, and Special Education
  • Ashley Brown, Assistant Professor, Department of Counseling, Leadership, and Special Education
  • Leslie Meadows, Chief Human Resources Officer

The workshop is open to faculty, staff, and administrators who want to foster supportive, wellness-centered environments on campus.
