CRCV Speaker Series welcomes small but powerful activist

Hear wisdom from the woman who was known as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Smallest Freedom Fighter.” Selma civil rights activist Sheyann Webb-Christburg will be the special guest at Wednesday’s Civil Rights & Civic Virtue Society Speaker Series event.

Webb-Christburg, co-author of the book “Selma, Lord, Selma,” will speak at 11:30 a.m. in Taylor Center 222-223. As an 8-year-old, she took part in the first attempted Selma to Montgomery march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in March 1965.

Preparing for professional schools

Pre-Professional Night at AUM. Monday, October 21, 2024. 5 - 7 PM in Goodwyn Hall, Room 112.

If you have a high school student in your family who is interested in eventually becoming a doctor, dentist or veterinarian, you will want to have them attend AUM’s Pre-Professional Night on Monday, Oct. 21.

In addition to offering information about professional school application processes and expectations, the event will also offer a look at progress on the university’s new Science & Technology Lab Complex.

Hoops Madness offers intro to basketball teams

AUM’s women’s basketball team will try to maintain the momentum generated by a 20-win season a year ago, while the men will unveil a roster that blends experienced contributors with exciting newcomers.

Students, faculty and staff will have an opportunity to see both teams for the first time at Hoops Madness on Monday, Oct. 21, from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the AUM Athletics Complex. Admission is free. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the first 150 students will receive a Hoops Madness T-shirt.

There will be games and giveaways for AUM students, and food will be provided after the event.

Here’s what’s happening in other AUM sports:

Volleyball: The Warhawks (4-13) will have back-to-back home matches this week, with Montevallo visiting Thursday at 6 p.m. and Valdosta State visiting Friday at 6 p.m.

Cross Country: AUM’s men and women each earned Top 10 finishes in the team standings at the Florida State University XC Invitational last Friday. The men finished seventh overall, while the AUM women were 10th.

Men’s Soccer: AUM (5-1-5) suffered its first loss of the season last weekend, falling 2-1 at West Florida. The Warhawks enter the week third in the Gulf South Conference standings based on total points, but will have an opportunity to stay near the top of the table this week. AUM visits Montevallo Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Women’s Soccer: The Warhawks (2-7-2) gave a tough West Florida team a battle on the road last weekend, losing 2-1. AUM will host Valdosta State on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Film Series features documentary, political thriller

Don’t miss upcoming features in the College of Liberal Arts Film Series.

On Wednesday, at 11 a.m., in Goodwyn Hall 110, catch “Ama’,” a feature length documentary telling the stories of abuses committed against Native American women by the American government in the 1960s and 70s. Popcorn and drinks will be provided.

On Wed., Oct. 23, at noon in Goodwyn 109, there will a screening of “Dark Money,” a political thriller examining the impact of untraceable corporate money on elections and public officials. A second screening will take place Thurs., Oct. 24, at 9 a.m. in Goodwyn Hall 110. The series will close on November 7 with a 6:30 p.m. showing of “Small Faces” in Goodwyn Hall 110. The story centers on Scotland’s violent gangland culture.

Unlocking the imaginations of local artists

Students examine art in the Cason McDermott Art Gallery.The creativity of local artists ages 13 to 62 will be on display this month in the “Imagination Station” exhibit at AUM’s Cason McDermott Art Gallery.

The juried exhibition will be open to the campus community through Thursday, Oct. 31. Conceptualized by local high school student Harmony Koda and brought to life with the help of AUM Department of Fine Arts Chair Will Fenn, the Imagination Station invited unestablished artists from Montgomery, Autauga and Elmore counties to submit original work for consideration.

Located in Goodwyn Hall, the McDermott Gallery is open Monday-Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A reception in celebration of the artists will be held at the gallery on Friday, Oct. 18, from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
