Warhawk Weekly 11-11: Arts students design logo; Faculty, staff excellence
AUM visual arts students design One Montgomery logo
AUM students in “VISU 3722: Design Techniques” recently partnered with One Montgomery, a local nonprofit dedicated to building unity and collaboration across communities, to design and launch the organization’s new logo.
The class project offered students a professional-level experience in client collaboration and brand development, said Associate Professor of Fine Arts Breuna Baine, the course instructor and faculty mentor for the project.
“Through projects like this, AUM’s Department of Fine Arts continues to give students practical opportunities to engage with the community, apply professional design skills, and contribute to meaningful causes,” she said.
The new One Montgomery logo — designed by Tristen Meads, a junior graphic design and communications major from Montgomery, and Antonio Sullivan, a senior graphic design major from Birmingham — was unveiled Thursday, Nov. 6, during a presentation at AUM’s Cason McDermott Art Gallery. Baine, Meads, and Sullivan received certificates of recognition from One Montgomery co-chairwoman Mary Anne Martin and incoming co-chairwoman Pearl Flowers.
“One Montgomery is very appreciative of the team effort by Breuna Baine and her students to provide us with a new logo,” Martin said. “We were founded as an organization to bring the Montgomery community together, and this partnership represents exactly why we were established.”
The partnership took shape when One Montgomery approached AUM before the start of the Spring 2025 semester to collaborate with Baine and her students on a new logo for the organization.
AUM recognizes faculty and staff excellence
Each year, Auburn University at Montgomery recognizes outstanding faculty and staff during the Fall Chancellor’s Convocation.
During this year’s event, five employees — Dr. Chanell Davis, Kenneth Jones, Dr. Ben Okeke, Angela Pringle and Molly Trammell — received Warhawk Spirit Awards, which honor faculty and staff who exemplify the university’s core values.
Six faculty members also received university awards honoring their teaching, research and service. AUM Provost Mrinal Varma presented awards to the following recipients:
- Dr. Donald Amoroso (College of Business) — Distinguished Research Professor Award
- Dr. Paul Hard (College of Education) — Outstanding Service Award
- Dr. Jessica Bodily (College of Sciences) — Distinguished Teaching Assistant Professor Award

Also in faculty honors, Alumni Association Board President Janice Marshall presented the 2025–26 Alumni Professorship Award to Dr. Tewhan Hahn, Distinguished Chair in the College of Business’ Department of Business Administration. Awarded through nominations by students and alumni, the prestigious honor recognizes faculty who demonstrate excellence in teaching, research, scholarly and creative achievements, and service. Eligible faculty must have at least 10 years of full-time service at AUM. Alumni Professorship recipients serve a three-year, nonrenewable term and receive an annual $2,500 salary supplement.

Poet Blas Falconer reads at AUM
Award-winning poet and editor Blas Falconer will visit AUM on Thursday, Nov. 13, to share selections from his newest poetry collection and discuss his work as co-editor of two essay collections. The event, “An Evening with Author Blas Falconer,” will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Goodwyn Hall 111. Admission is free and open to the public.
Hosted by AUM’s Department of English and Philosophy, Falconer’s talk will include a public reading of his work, reflections on his writing process, insights into the craft of creative writing, and perspectives from his experience in the publishing industry.
Falconer’s latest poetry collection, “Rara Avis,” explores the relationships among men —between peers, lovers, and parents and children — to question and reimagine traditional models of authority and power. He is also coeditor of “The Other Latin@: Writing Against a Singular Identity” and “Mentor & Muse: Essays from Poets to Poets.” His work has earned numerous honors, including the Thom Gunn Award, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, the Maureen Egen Writers Exchange Award from Poets & Writers, a Tennessee Individual Artist Grant, the New Delta Review Eyster Prize for Poetry, and the Barthelme Fellowship. He currently teaches in the Master of Fine Arts program at San Diego State University, where he serves as editor in chief of “Poetry International Online.”

Warhawks shine on the field and trail
The No. 3-seeded AUM Warhawks men’s soccer team advanced to the Gulf South Conference semifinals after a thrilling 100th-minute golden goal by Mikayil Bacar Said lifted AUM past No. 6-seeded University of Montevallo. The Warhawks outshot the Falcons 21-13 and will face No. 2-seeded University of West Florida at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at the Loretta P. Spencer Sports Complex Championship Field in Huntsville.
AUM’s women’s cross-country team capped its season with a program-best 10th-place finish at the NCAA Division II South Regional Championship, while the men’s cross-country team tied its highest-ever regional finish at eighth place. Both teams competed against top programs from across the region in the event, hosted by Florida Southern University at Holloway Park.
Restore AUM’s forest with RHERI
Celebrate both at AUM’s Forest Restoration and Pecan Celebration on Saturday, Nov. 15
Held from noon to 3 p.m. at Pecan Grove near the AUM Forest, the celebration is hosted by AUM’s Rural History and Ecology Research Institute (RHERI) and Warhawk Seeds, the university’s student ecology club. The event is open to students, faculty, staff and community members.
During the event, participants will learn about the forest’s rich history and ecology while helping to restore the AUM Forest by planting native azaleas, collecting pecans, and removing invasive plants. Free lunch and pecan snacks will be provided. Register online.
Attendees should meet at the bridge leading to the AUM Forest and wear clothing suitable for outdoor activities. Sturdy shoes are required, with long pants and sleeves preferred. Guests are encouraged to bring a water bottle, sunscreen, and bug spray.
The celebration highlights AUM’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, environmental education, and community engagement.
