Lights, Camera, Storytelling: AUM hosts free multimedia camp for high schoolers

Get ready to hit record. AUM’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the Department of Communication and Theatre are rolling out their fourth annual AV Storytelling Day Camp, July 7–11.

AUM Communication professors teach students how to use the camera switcher for a news broadcast.The free, five-day intensive camp is tailor-made for high school students who are passionate about multimedia storytelling. Whether students are into podcasting, TV production, voice acting, news writing, or strategic communication, this camp is an opportunity to create memorable multimedia projects for portfolios.

From crafting documentaries to participating in roundtable talks and fictional radio dramas, campers will gain hands-on experience to build portfolio-worthy projects.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Alabama Press Association and the AUM Office of the Provost, 20 students can attend this year’s AV Storytelling Day Camp to learn from media professionals.

Eligible students must be in high school or recent graduates not starting college until fall 2025. Spots are limited, so get your name on the list and let the storytelling begin!  Register online by June 20.

AUM poetry competition spotlights young writers

This spring, Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) hosted its second annual high school poetry competition, honoring five talented students from the River Region for their outstanding creative writing.

Organized by AUM’s Department of English and Philosophy in partnership with the AUM English Club, the competition recognizes exceptional poets in grades 9–12 from across the region.

River Region students recognized for their outstanding work in this year’s competition are Ifeoluwa Braimoh and Jamesyn Williams (first place tie), Keyla Mendez Luna (second place), Skylar Jackson (third place) and Mikayla Austin (honorable mention).

This year’s poem submissions centered around the theme “Connection and Creation in a Digital Age,” aligning with the theme of AUM’s Spring 2025 edition of its student-run literary magazine, “Common Thread.”

Row, row, row your boat

AUM's Dragon Boat Team competes at the Montgomery festival.AUM’s Office of Collaborative Partnerships is hoping to make some waves at the 11th Annual Montgomery Dragon Boat Festival with the help of students, faculty and staff. The university is putting together a crew of 20 rowers and five alternates to represent AUM in the event, which will be held on Saturday, June 14, at 8:30 a.m. at Riverfront Park.

So far, the team has secured eight rowers and three volunteers but needs your help to complete the crew.
